Monthly Social:On Thursday, November 19th the Younger Members met up at Sherlock’s Pub for our monthly social. The 12 members in attendance seemed to have a great time. Special thanks to Brian Ridley for setting up this event. There will be no December monthly social but we hope you can all join us for the December branch meeting at the Aeros Game on December 16th!
PE Luncheon: On Wednesday, November 18th the YMF held a PE luncheon at LJA's office. 24 Younger Members were in attendance. The panel of recent test-takers included, David Garza, Blanca Obregon, Jason Svatek and Ruben Solis. They provided valuable information and tips on how to prepare for the PE exam. Special thanks to our panelists, Julia Mai and Suzanne Mullins for their efforts in putting together this event. In case you missed it, our next PE Luncheon will be held sometime in the Spring of 2010.
Technical Seminar Series - LJA: On Tuesday, November 11th LJA hosted a technical seminar to the Younger Members regarding the services involving, Public Works/Transportation Structures, Water Resources, Land Development, GIS/Discovery and Planning . There were 6 younger members in attendance. Special thanks to Clay Forister, Jerrold Graham, Mark Janzer and Calvin Ladner over at LJA for putting on the presentation.
Upcoming Events
Technical Seminar Series – Premier Concrete Products, Inc.: Premier Concrete Products, Inc. will be holding a technical tour on Friday, December 4th. Premier Concrete manufactures and delivers the Shoretec Articulated Concrete Blocks/Mats used for erosion control and pipeline protection. Typical applications include: drainage channels, dikes, levees, river fronts, coastal shorelines, pipeline protection, boat ramps, retention basins, etc.
The tour will include a brown bag presentation at 11:30am in the Terracon Training Room. Afterwards, we will caravan over to the Premier Concrete plant for a tour of their facility. The tour will be completed around 1:30pm. Please RSVP on the Houston ASCE website by December 3rd. Contact Julio Salinas (JSALINA@dot.state.tx.us) if you have any questions.
Elves & More: The YMF will be participating in the Elves & More Bike Program, Saturday, December 12th from 9 am to noon at Reliant Park. We will be helping many volunteers assemble thousands of bikes for at-risk children in targeted neighborhoods around Houston. Volunteer roles that day range from assembling the bikes, checking other volunteers in, and general support volunteers who will be placed on an as-needed basis around the site. The program strongly recommends bringing your own tools if available, including: 12mm, 13mm, 14mm, and 15mm wrenches, a 6mm Allen wrench (for some models), a #2 Phillips head screwdriver, and a pair of scissors or other tool to cut bindings on the packaging.
If you are interested in participating in this event, please follow these steps:
1) Register online at www.elvesandmore.org for the December 12th, 9 am to noon shift. Registration will also include a $20 donation to the program to cover the cost of bike parts, Reliant fees, etc.
2) Email Laura Espinoza at lgespinoza@lan-inc.com to confirm your registration with ASCE and receive more information about a meet-up time on the day of the event.
