Happy New Year! I hope you enjoyed a safe holiday season with your friends and families. For many, it’s tradition at the New Year to take a reflective look at the previous year’s challenges and achievements, while establishing goals and resolutions for the future. We closed out 2008 with another terrific meeting. We had two informative technical sessions. Jeff Durso, P.E. of Brown and Gay Engineers, Inc. delivered a presentation on GIS management, and Randy Otts with MIOX Corporation discussed onsite mixed oxidant generation equipment for water and wastewater disinfection. Our main speaker, Rodney Daab of Franks International and member of the Speaker’s Forum of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, shared with us the story of this famous event as well as the history of Texas cowboys and trail rides.
We were also entertained by the sounds of the Salvation Army Harbor Light Choir. They provided great holiday music during our dinner. In the spirit of the season, many branch members donated Christmas gifts for the local Toys for Tots program. Members of the US Marine Corps were onsite to receive the gifts and join us for dinner. Everyone had a great time.
2008 was definitely another successful and exciting year for the Houston Branch. Among the highlights: in February we celebrated our 65th anniversary and in the following months the branch continued its tradition of state and national involvement including the election of Brian Manning, P.E. to President-Elect of the Texas Section and the elevation of Wayne Klotz, P.E. to President of ASCE National. Also, the national fall conference included the induction of Dr. Jerry Rogers, P.E. as a Distinguished Member of ASCE, and the recognition of former Houston branch member Sean Merrell, P.E. as a winner of the national Edmund Friedman Young Engineer of the Year.
Looking ahead, I’m confident that 2009 will be another exciting, award-winning year for the branch. Throughout the year, we’ll have many events for our membership, including our monthly meetings, social networking, technical seminars, public outreach, section meetings, etc. If anyone is interested in becoming more involved, please contact one of our branch officers or visit our website: www.ascehouston.org.
I wish everyone a joyful, prosperous 2009, and I look forward to seeing you all at our January branch meeting.
