HCA logoThis month's Lunch meeting is being co-hosted with The Houston Contractors Association which enters its 52nd year of operation in 2008. HCA is a local, non-profit trade association which provides services to approximately 400 member companies in the civil construction industry.

HCA members received national recognition for their volunteer involvement in a city wide project to curb crime and to clean up Houston’s inner-city neighborhoods. In conjunction with the City of Houston, our contractors sponsored the HCA Demolition Day and have demolished hundreds of dangerous and abandoned buildings making areas of Houston which were once hazardous, now a much safer place for the citizens to live.

Through the generosity of HCA members, the R.P. Doss/Houston Contractors Endowment fund has been established at the University of Houston. This is a fund that provides two renewable one year scholarship grants to deserving undergraduate students, one in the Cullen College of Engineering and one in the College of Technology.

As part of HCA's ambitious community service program, HCA adopted Easter Elementary School in order to forge a partnership with this school. HCA members have donated time tutoring the students and HCA also donated needed school supplies and equipment to the school. In 1999, HCA participated along with the City of Houston and HISD in the building of a SPARK Park at Valley West Elementary School. HCA members donated approximately $80,000 to the SPARK Park in labor and materials. More recently HCA began an internship program with the Humble ISD Career and Technology Education Center. Working with Humble ISD, our Education Committee works to place young students that have an interest in the field of civil construction or engineering within our member companies, helping to promote the industry to future generations. HCA is currently working to expand this program into other school districts in the area.

The Houston Contractors Association worked with the Harris County Juvenile Courts System for six years as a sponsor for the Harris County Boot Camp Program. HCA sponsored the Alpha Platoon until the program was discontinued in 2004. HCA members volunteered three to four hours of their time twice a week to tutor the probationers on basic academic and life skills. After the probationers graduated from the fifteen week program, HCA worked to place each person in a full time position within the construction industry. The Houston Contractors Association has held a Christmas toy drive for the United States Marine Corps Toys for Tots foundation since 1991. The toy drive is held in conjunction with our annual Christmas Dinner and Dance and the volume of gifts donated has measurably grown each consecutive year.

HCA holds a monthly luncheon on the fourth Thursday of every month. The purpose of the luncheon is to encourage members to become acquainted with new members, discuss the latest developments in the construction community and enjoy our guest speakers. More info on HCA can be found at their website http://www.houstoncontractors.org
