Dr. Jim Lester, President and CEO of HARC, an independent research hub helping people thrive and nature flourish, has worked on environmental issues in the Houston region for more than 20 years. Dr. Lester is a recognized expert on watershed management for the Upper Texas Gulf Coast.

In this presentation, Dr. Lester will use four examples of simple engineering solutions to human needs involving modification of natural water systems. These are dams and reservoirs; dredged navigation channels; wastewater discharge to streams; and drilling water wells. The “unintended” consequences of those simple modifications will be enumerated, e.g. sequestration of sediment and nutrients by dams. Some alternatives to the simple solutions that involve more complex engineering will be discussed, e.g. storage of water in aquifers. In conclusion, several principles on which more sustainable systems could be based will be offered.

May Branch Meeting Sponsor

ABT, Inc began with a single focus: provide products and services to solve North America's surface drainage problems.

With European technology and the superior raw materials to produce high quality polymer concrete available in the Piedmont area of the Carolinas, ABT began operation just north of Charlotte in Troutman North Carolina on March 31, 1983.

Over the last several decades, ABT has experienced steady sales growth by providing new products and technical services that not only met but exceeded customer expectations. In the process, the company became America's premier supplier of line drainage products.

Ongoing improvements in the original PolyDrain trench drain system have provided customers with solutions for their most difficult drainage problems. In 1992, ABT began marketing Trench Former, a self forming drainage system that is far superior to traditional hand formed systems.

The original Trench Former products were of the "custom" variety with the system being manufactured to customer specifications. In 1994, the Trench Former line was expanded to include a standard 12" wide system, TF-14, that could be ordered and shipped immediately saving time and money. Later that year the efficient and easy to install Oil Water Separator was added to the product line.

President's Message

The 83rd Texas Legislative Session is in full swing and will be wrapping up at the end of May. As our elected officials in Austin wade through a sea of thousands of bills that have been introduced, I encourage you to remind them of the critical need for long-term infrastructure investment and its vital role in the continued financial health and prosperity of our state. The Texas Tribune website provides a handy way to review bills by subject or legislator (www.texastribune.org/session/83R/bills), and additional information can be found on the Texas Legislature website (www.capitol.state.tx.us). One of my favorite ways of contacting my legislators is by using ASCE's Click & Connect website (capwiz.com/asce/home). I hope that you will consider using these tools to assist our legislators in making decisions that will benefit all Texans. On April 17, 2013, the West Fertilizer Company storage and distribution facility in West, Texas exploded, killing 15, injuring nearly 200,...

Ongoing improvements in the original PolyDrain trench drain system have provided customers with solutions for their most difficult...

Past Younger Member Events

2013 - Volunteering at Houston Children's Festival Downtown On Sunday April the 7th, the ASCE Houston Branch sponsored a booth at the 2013 Childrens Festival! ASCEs booth was centered around a bridge building activity, where children had the opportunity to win prizes based on how strong their bridges were. Some of the prizes included Legos (by far the most popular), engineering books, videos and ASCE bags and pencils. We had many prospective engineers emerge throughout the day! Thanks to all the volunteers, the ASCE Houston Branch, and Brian Huang and Brett Pope for working so hard to get this set up! The Childrens Festival is located in downtown Houston and is attended by over 50,000 children, parents, and sponsors. The festival benefits CHILD ADVOCATES, INC. and the abused and neglected children that it serves. In fact, The Festival has now raised over $4.5 million for Child Advocates. http://www.houstonchildrensfestival.com/ 2013 ASCE Trivia Night During the last week...
