Howdy!

I hope you all are refreshed, rested, and ready for 2012! It is the time to implement those New Years Resolutions, and for ASCE our #1 Resolution is settling down to a consistent meeting location. We’ll be meeting at Smith and Wollensky (4007 Westheimer, Houston TX 77027) for lunch meetings through June. I’m excited that we’ve been able to select a meeting venue that is centrally located, within our budget, and renowned for the quality of food. Just remember that parking is limited so be sure and use the FREE VALET! Of course, tipping is encouraged.

With the new meeting location and switch to lunches, there are also a few changes to our meeting registration and format. First, due to the new venue and our headcount reporting requirements, we have gone to an online preregistration / prepayment only setup. This new system will help streamline registration, allow us to plan for attendance more efficiently, protect ASCE from the damage of no-shows, and get you into our lunches more quickly. As we move forward, we may be able to evaluate a walk-up policy to allow for last minute additions.

Second, our technical session will now be held after the main speaker. We understand that our employers don’t give us all day for lunch, but if you need the continuing education or our technical speakers are of interest to you, please stick around after the main speaker for an informative presentation. The lunch program will be as follows:

Storm Damage Reduction on Coastal Roadways

Coastal roadways are those roads influenced by their presence in or near the water level, wave, and sand transport environment unique to a coast. Many different natural processes and forces impact roads near the coast such as shoreline retreat, storm surge, wave action, and high velocity flows during overtopping of the roadway. These forces can severely damage or destroy the roadway if protection is not implemented. This talk discusses the mechanisms of the most frequent causes of damage to coastal roadways and methods for protecting against this damage. Examples of one type of protection schemes - revetments - are presented and important design considerations for revetments are discussed.

Call for Volunteers – Practitioner Advisers for UH Student Chapter

The University of Houston Student Branch is seeking two Practitioner Advisers to mentor students and assist the student section. One practitioner adviser should be a recent graduate and preferably not a UH graduate. The other should have 10+ years experience and may be a UH graduate; however this is not a requirement. This will be a two year appointment and will require approximately two evenings a month. Additional roles and responsibilities include:

Prior to the academic year, call and meet with the Faculty Advisor. Invite other faculty and the Department Head as well. Discuss the coming year and the role and importance of the ASCE Student Organization. Don't be shy – tell them what you think. After all, you represent the practicing profession into which most students will enter.
Meet with the Student Organization officers early in the academic year and at several occasions during the year. Encourage them to set goals for the year and meet their responsibilities. Help them identify subjects and speakers. Be careful, though not to contact speakers or do the students' work. This is their responsibility. They learn by doing.
Report on the activities of the local Section/Branch at each Student Organization meeting and encourage students to participate in their activities.
Arrange for a joint meeting with the local Section/Branch.
Insist that students approach problems and carry out responsibilities, help them do "post mortem" and determine the cause. But don't stop there. Encourage students to examine the problem in an engineering fashion, and design a system that will work next time.

Recap

Elves & More Bike Build: On Saturday, December 10^th, about 9 ASCE Younger Members came together to participate in the Elves & More Bike Build at Reliant Center. Along with hundreds of other volunteers, ASCE helped assemble bikes for under-privileged children in the Houston area. After a delicious breakfast and informative training, Younger Members set off to work in what turned out to be a great team-building and hands-on experience. What a great way to give back to others during the holiday season.

Bowling Night: On Thursday, January 19^th, from 5:30 to 7:30 the Younger Members would like to invite ASCE to the 300 Houston Bowling Lanes for an ASCE Bowling Night. This will be a great opportunity to meet other Younger Members in the organization and show off your bowling skills. 300 Houston is located at 925 Bunker Hill Road. 12^th Annual ASCE Houston Branch Golf Tournament: On Friday, April 20^th, the Younger Members will be hosting the 12^th Annual ASCE Golf Tournament. The tournament will take place at the Cypresswood Golf Course, 21602 Cypresswood Drive in Spring, Texas. Check-in will begin at 8 am with a shotgun start at 9 am. Technical Tours

Reliant Stadium Tour: We will take a tour of Reliant Stadium on Thursday, February 2^nd. The tour will start at 4:30 pm and will be about 45 minutes to an hour in duration. Reliant Stadium is a splendid architectural and engineering achievement of style, sophistication and ultra efficiency. Join us on a tour led by one of the engineers responsible for the design and maintenance of Reliant stadium. We will get a Field side view of the retractable roof, with someone there to answer questions and share some of the more difficult engineering challenges that were overcome during the design and construction. The rest of the Public tour with visiting the Locker room of the Texans, a step into the pent house suites is included as well. Volunteer Activities

Texas-Mexico Student Conference: On January 13^th and 14^th, the University of Houston will be hosting the 2012 Texas-Mexico Student Conference. This is a perfect opportunity to work with the students in preparation for becoming engineers, or to at least attend the conference to support the students. Engineer’s Day at the Children’s Museum: On Saturday, February 18^th, ASCE Younger Members will help volunteer at the Children’s Museum for Engineer Day. Volunteers will have the opportunity to help kids with several different math and science-related activities. All members are welcome to join for this valuable experience. 2012 E2-Engineering Excellence Competition: The E2-Engineering Excellence Competition is looking for judges and general volunteers for preliminary and finals competitions. The E2 Competition is designed to provide elementary through high school students with an opportunity to demonstrate their problem-solving skills, research and presentation skills, and their practical application of math, science and technology. The top 10 winners from each education level (elementary, middle and high school) from the Preliminary competition on February 4, 2012 will advance to the final round of competition on February 18, 2012. Early registration will be open via the ASCE Houston website until the Thursday before the meeting, and then late registration will remain open until close of business the Monday before the meeting. Walk-ups will be allowed as seating permits provided they pay using cash or check, however if you want to guarantee admittance to the meeting, you need to register and pay on-line. Registered members seats will be held until the meal is served, but if a registered member does not show up, their seat could be given to a walk-up depending on the attendance of that particular meeting. 11:30 Lunch Served & Announcements

11:45 Main Speaker

12:45 Technical Speaker

The biggest change from last year’s meetings is that the technical session will now be after the meal and the main speaker. If you do not wish to attend the technical session, we ask that you please vacate the meeting room following the main speaker’s presentation so that the technical presentation can begin in a timely manner.
